The Culture
Virtus has its beginnings in 1990, when (at age 28) its founder, Howard Mimnaugh, CPA, left KPMG Peat Marwick (NYC Middle Market Tax Practice) to found his own firm. Howard is a third-generation entrepreneur – his father owned and operated knitting mills in North and South Carolina, while his grandfather ran a successful painting contractor business in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; moreover, both were active real estate investors and managers. In addition to founding and managing a multi-million dollar professional service firm, Howard has purchased and developed numerous properties and larger tracts of land over the past 30+ years. Most recently, he developed a 12,000-square-foot commercial building (c. 1870) into six luxury residential units and one commercial unit 428northampton.com; he has also participated as an angel investor in various startup businesses. As such, Howard is as much an entrepreneur as he is a Certified Public Accountant and business advisor. He understands his customers and their various financial, tax, and business advisory needs because he is one of them, and has spent the past three decades nurturing this culture of understanding within the Virtus Group organization.
The Reason We Chose to Name Our Firm Virtus
Virtus is the Latin word used to describe the Ancient Roman virtues of valor, courage, excellence, character, and hard work. Encompassing the firm’s ambition, work ethic, and commitment to exhibiting the aforementioned values in our services, the breadth and scope that Virtus signifies makes this a particularly apt title for the firm.
